Running and Travel - A Perfect Match

I always have this need to travel pulling at my heart strings. I can't pin point when it began, because it hasn't always been the case. But in the last few years I have come to appreciate and need it more. When I became a runner, I discovered a different world than I would normally see by car. When I travel I need to run, to explore and learn about the place I am at. I see so much more than I ever would if I stayed inside a small, tourist bubble.

Running connects you to locals, to the ground, to your own breath. In the past few years I have enjoyed it less in the city where I live because I really am not in love with the area. There are a few good spots, but there are so many other places I would rather run that make me feel free.

Travel lets me escape where I am and run new trails, see more places and meet new people. In the last few years I have traveled to Chicago, Washington DC, NYC, Australia, New Zealand, Oregon, LA and Washington. I hope to make it more this year.

Last week I visited New Zealand and discovered pristine beaches, trails and gorgeous green hills and valleys. Along with running I practiced a bit of yoga. I am by no means a yogi, but if I lived near scenery this beautiful I am pretty sure I would take up an outdoor yoga practice every day. The air and views are so majestic and just breathtaking.

As for running, there are endless trails, mountains, valleys and beaches to explore. Take a ferry to an island or run through an old lava cave. The air is crisp and clean. Just make sure you bring plenty of sun block! You'll feel like you are on set of The Lord of the Rings majestic mountain scenes in many places.

Post-run you can take a dip in the river, ocean or one of the many natural hot springs that dot the island. It truly is a runner's paradise. I honestly never wanted to leave. I would move to New Zealand or Australia in a heartbeat. Until then, I'll have the memories and look for new, exciting places to explore.

I really hope Europe may be next. Switzerland anyone?
