The Anatomy of My Dreams

This past weekend I finished the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco for the fourth time (recap soon to come). Being around so much energy and so many "just do it" attitudes got me thinking even more about my dreams. I've always been one to have big goals, big dreams and visions of one day working at Nike World Headquarters in Portland, OR. The last few years I have moved a few steps forward and then it seems a few steps back. As a Nike Women Ambassador in 2012 I was sure I had made it. This was only a brief 6 month gig and then I was back to where I started. I had a few connections, but they didn't seem to pan out. This last year I was able to attend a few events at Nike San Francisco and Nike Union Street stores, NTC Tour and then was invited on the amazing Nike Zoom Project! Again, a few steps forward, but no potential dream job. I know it takes years of work, connections, the right job to open at the right time, and luck, but still, it's hard to be knocking on the door of your dream and no one answers.

I recently pursued a job as a social media manager at another popular women's fitness brand and while they seemed excited in the beginning, nothing panned out. Again, two steps forward and three backwards. I know someday the pieces will all have to fall into place, but until them I'm stuck trying to figure out why I have these dreams and goals.

The Anatomy of My Dreams

So the anatomy of my dreams is this: My Nike dream began back when I was in grade school. I had really large feet for a 12 year old and Nike was the only company that made cute women's shoes in my size. They had me hooked. From then on I had a dream of working for and with a company that catered to everyone. A company that believed in everyone, no matter how large or small. Nike fit that profile. My dream grew as I continued playing sports, college basketball and taking up distance running. My dream comes from a personal connection with a brand that helped to shape my school years.

There are many times I have wished that I could take away my personal connection to the brand, but in the end they helped to shape my view on life and my athletic personality. I want to be a part of the company that helped shape my future and help it to shape the future of other young girls when they are struggling to find themselves. The Nike Women's brand is taking steps to make sure we all feel empowered and included and I know I could offer insight and help with that effort.

This week and in the coming year they are launching a huge women's initiative. Female athletes are ready to hear the message, ready to be treated as strong, powerful and feminine. Women are realizing that fitness is fun and empowering.

Congratulations Nike on a great campaign and what I am sure will be success in the future. I hope to be more than just a consumer and influencer. I hope to someday be a part of this incredible team working to enhance women's fitness and lifestyle.
