Layering for Winter Workouts with Merino Wool and Buff®

Disclaimer: I received a Merino Wool Buff® as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews! Winter is on it's way. Evenings tend to cool off and when I wake up for my morning runs the air has a crisp chill to it. I have to admit, growing up in Oregon, this is my favorite time of year. I love bundling up and simply heading out for a morning run.

Fall and winter running can be much more enjoyable when you have the right gear. Wool is one of my favorites for keeping me warm and dry on the run. Not only does it wick away sweat, but it also keeps me warm even when damp.

My neck, head, and ears tend to be the colder parts of my body, so I always try to bring a hat or my Buff® along to protect them from the temperatures. I have a few lightweight summer Buff® products, but this is my first Merino Wool Buff® and I am loving it!

Dress for the weather

The important thing about winter workouts is to remember to dress for the weather you will be training in. Layering up is one of the easiest things you can do. Wear a base layer tank top, followed by a long sleeve shirt (quick drying fabric or Merino Wool are great options), and maybe top with a vest if temperatures are pretty cool. Keep your head covered with a Merino Wool Buff® and wear gloves and insulated pants. You can always remove your shirt layers and Buff® as the weather-or you-heats up on the run.

How I Use My Merino Wool Buff®

I often begin my run or workout with my Buff® around my ears and head. As I heat up, I'll drop it down around my neck. When I get really warm, I'll take it off completely and wrap it around my wrist to be used like a sweat towel to wipe away my perspiration. I've even used it as a hairband in a pinch when mine broke! Wool is one of the best fabrics to combat cold weather and still allow you to get a great workout in.

Benefits of Merino Wool

  • Thermal insulation - creates a barrier to the cold.
  • Wind protection - blocks wind and keeps you warm.
  • Moisture management and quick drying - transfers sweat away from the body to evaporate away.
  • Odor control - keeps stink at bay during your workout.
  • Super soft - not itchy or scratchy against my skin.

Why Buff®?

So why do I choose Buff® products you might ask? There are a few reasons. For one, their headquarters is just an hour away from me in Santa Rosa, so it's a local company I can support. I also have about 6 of their products and have never had a problem with them. They perform under pressure. They keep my hair out of my face, wick away sweat, and keep me warm on the long run. I absolutely love them!
