5 Tips for Running in the Rain
Runners get to run in all different elements. I've been spoiled with mainly sun the last few years in Northern California, but in the next month I will be settling back in Portland, Oregon. As home of rain and clouds, I will soon be training in drastically different weather. I'm super excited for the change, but I know there will be some adjusting.
In preparation, I've done a few things to get ready for the new weather! Even if you aren't moving, you still need to know how to train in weather you are not used to.
5 Tips for Running in the Rain
Invest in a water resistant jacket. This is one of the most important things you can do! Read the label and make sure it is made to shed water. Look for taped seams to keep the water from sneaking in via the stitching and a hood to keep your head dry and the water from sliding down your back.
Wear water resistant shoes with good traction. Get a pair of shoes specifically for shedding water and spray them with a second layer of water repellant every so often to keep them sealed. Traction is also important. Get a pair of shoes for trail and a separate pair of shoes for road running, as the tread pattern needs to be different depending on what terrain you run on.
Invest in wool socks. My favorite brand is from Feetures! Running. These socks wick away moisture and keep your feet dry even in wet conditions. While I love ankle socks, getting a pair of crew or knee socks can keep your ankles and legs warmer.
Wear a hat. Wearing a hat with a bill will help keep water out of your eyes and off of your face so you can focus on the run. Any baseball cap will do.
Embrace the dampness. Running in the rain can be fun! You're going to sweat anyway when you run, so embrace the rain and learn to enjoy it. You can always look forward to a steaming cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate post-run.
